Dear Diaryland,

Subject: summer movies

had the stinkbot this past weekend, so lots of fun and family-friendly activities going on.

we also made the pilgrimage to see charlie and the chocolate factory. my review is: meh.

don't get me wrong: i love me some depp. depp is the magical potion that can turn an otherwise unwatchable film into cinematic gold--well, if not gold, then at least a shiny, pretty alloy that resembles gold for the length of time you're in the theatre. (see: pirates, neverland, etc.)

but c and the cf? not so much. it's okay and everything, but it lacks that kind of magic and awe that reading the book inspires. (which i thought the film adaptation of james and the giant peach did beautifully.)

depp's anna wintour hairdo really bugged me, as did the completely unnecessary shoehorning in of wonka's father. what the what? a bunch of other stuff kinda bugged me too, but it's just the overall vibe, i guess. just a general lack of connection to what was going on. the stinker said the same thing, but in kid language: "that was kinda boring."

so: meh. don't believe the hype.

wanna take kids to see a good summer movie? sky high. i know, i know. but i shit you not. funny, entertaining, brisk, and well-paced and plotted. a well-intentioned effort that actually works and features some very nice performances and comic cameos.

cypress gave it her unofficial seal of approval: "I would totally see that again. what was your favourite part, mummy? my favourite was when the boy..."

Yours very truly,

Ms. Fancy Lady
